48-hour week
This refers to the maximum number of hours an employee can work in a week. This is also known as the working time directive. Individuals are able to opt out of this.
The number of hours worked is calculated as an average over a reference period. The reference period is 17 weeks as standard although different jobs can have their own reference period.
