Flexible hours form part of flexible working. Organisations may apply policies and meanings to flexible hours. In general, this will mean allowing the start or end time of the working day to be varied by the employee. They may need to provide their employer with some notice of their intended hours and may have to work core hours.
Under flexible working employees may be required to work their contractual hours within a period as they see fit (this is known as flexitime). An organisation may use a time and attendance system to monitor this; automatically recording hours over or under in a period.
