Markup languages provide a means of including data and meta information about that data. Markup was originally used by printers in order to indicate which items of text should appear in what font size, colour or position.
In the modern era a common mark up language is HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). This allows a webserver to communicate the data of a web page along with information about how to display and handle that data in a single document. Mark up languages do not appear as part of the final rendered document for a viewer.
