Overtime

When an employee works beyond the number of hours, they are contracted to the additional hours are considered to be overtime.

Overtime is typically paid at a higher rate than standard contractual hours. Employees may request or be asked to work overtime. Employment contracts may indicate rules and policies which govern overtime.

Flexible working schemes can often include policies relating to overtime. In flexitime schemes overtime may not (always) be paid at a high rate; it may be taken as TOIL or to make up a balance remaining from a previous period.
