Planned absence includes leave for holidays and training. These types of absence tend to be booked a long time in advance so the employer is able to plan ahead and arrange someone to cover the duties of the absence staff member during their absence.
An employee does not have to give long term notice that they wish to take a planned absence, the notice period should be twice as long as the amount of leave requested plus 1 day. This means that for fortnights holiday an employer will have approximately one month notice of the absence so be able to make the necessary arrangements. For shorter breaks there is less warning and also less disruption caused.
