Role can sometimes be synonymous with job title but does not need to be. Roles may be assumed under certain circumstance but not apply at other times or be related to a person’s typical duties. Examples are found in emergency situations where some staff will take on roles which they do not usually perform, such as leading an evacuation or administering first aid. In this way roles may be assigned outside the usual hierarchy of an organisation affording juniors higher levels of authority whilst acting within a particular role.
