A person who runs their own business is class as a ‘self-employed’ worker (or contractor). It is possible for an individual to be both self-employed in one role but be an employee elsewhere.
Those classed as self-employed have a limited set of protections as the individual is both employer and employee in regards to themselves. They may gain some level of protection through contracts which they make with clients.
Self-employed workers are similar to contractors.
