The working time directive is an EU law which outlines a number of rights for employees. Within the UK the most notable right was the 48-hour working week.
Employees are able to opt out of the 48-hour working week. In some roles this limit does not apply, for young workers additional rules apply.
The length of the working week is averaged over a number of weeks. Usually this is 17 weeks although certain jobs have their own reference periods.
